To win the White House Dem’s NEED young voters
Volpe 23, John Della Volpe is the director of polling at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, “I’m a Pollster. Democrats Need Young Voters to Win in 2024.”, 2023-11-10, JLB, https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/10/opinion/democrats-biden-young-voters-2024.html
So when I read poll numbers like the New York Times, Siena poll, the first thing I looked at, of course, was the under 30 vote, which is mostly Gen Z with some millennials. And it’s close. And it’s far too close than it should be for a Democrat to feel confident at this stage.
What that poll tells me is that this is a very different electorate than what we saw in 2020. Increasing levels of cynicism, lower levels of interest in voting, less affiliation with the Democratic Party, which means that we now have a greater degree of interest in finding alternative solutions.
There was a Quinnipiac Poll published recently, which had a hypothetical match-up between Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Cornel West, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. We found that roughly 40 percent, roughly 2 in 5 younger voters supported either Kennedy or Cornel West. That is of serious, serious concern today. They have the potential to drain votes away from Joe Biden, which, at the end of the day, is a vote for Donald Trump, if you’re asking me.
Listen, for a Democrat to win the White House, they need to rack up as much youth support, specifically among the 18 to 29-year-old cohort, as they possibly can. So the first step, I think if we were to re-engage younger people, is to make the case that government can and has done big things, to solve problems, to make life better for us as individuals, for our community, and for our country. That’s incredibly important.
The Biden campaign needs to convince and persuade young people that President Biden and Vice President Harris are the right team to see their vision into its next phase. There’s been a tremendous amount of progress that the Biden-Harris administration has made on a host of issues. Young people need to be reminded of those issues. They’re not tuning into the news. They need to be reminded that because of them, America is a different and, I would argue, a better place.
