Some members of Congress are busy working on a new Farm Bill, hoping to prevent the need for another extension at the end of September.
Representative Kelly Armstrong said the House marked up the Farm Bill out of the agriculture committee and passed it along party lines. He said Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., who serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee, came over to the House side to try and rally Democrats against it. He said he thinks that’s unfortunate because the House has a good bill to start with. Armstrong said he is hopeful they can find a way to get it to the floor and pass it over to the Senate.
“What the best likelihood of getting the farm bill done would be in the lame duck. Stabenow is retiring, she’s the chair of the Senate Ag committee. I think regardless of what happens in the election cycle, a lot of different people up here are going to want to clear the deck before the next Congress starts,” said Armstrong.
Armstrong said the House is going to continue working to get it done as soon as they can.
