A week ago, Smith & Hopen posted an article highlighting the importance of the U.S. patent system to the prosperity of our economy. Yesterday, the Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) released its 2020 International IP Index. The report highlights the continued global dominance of the U.S. intellectual property system, which ranks as the number one in the world. The IP index also shows that our patent system is the second strongest in the world, only behind Singapore. Although Singapore may have a more robust patent infrastructure, its overall size is dwarfed in comparison to the U.S., so the head-to-head comparison is not particularly fair. The U.S. patent system is the cornerstone of a healthy and prosperous American economy. The 2020 International IP Index underscores our position as the global intellectual property leader. The IP Index also shows that other countries are also investing heavily in bringing their national patent systems up to the standards the U.S. has established. Strong international patent infrastructure is excellent for the American economy and allows American innovators to meaningfully secure and enforce their patent rights abroad.
